About the project
The first words of the head of state that Rome was represented in the XIX century by the Head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Archimandrite Clement (Vernikovsky), with the support of Emperor Nicholas II. The revolution prevented the implementation of the project. Now a days, this idea, raised again by the Orthodox community, wasblessed by Alexy II.
The initial sketches and layout of the temple were made by Maxim Shirnin together with A.N. Obolensky. The temple is located in an area with apronounced relief. In this regard, a large basement of the temple was designed, which made it possible to accommodate all the rooms of the parable, including refectories, conference rooms, classrooms, a hotel, and a library.
An extensive area around the templewas also developed, with terraced areasand a system of stairs leading to theentrance to the temple. The volume ofthe temple has a tent-like completionwith a dome decorated with skylights and an attached bell tower with arched openings.
During the approval and construction, the project underwent a number of significant changes.
On May 9, 2006, a minor consecration ceremony was held in Rome for the Russian Orthodox Church of St.Catherine the Great Martyr, built in the Eternal City.
